Artist Statement

I trained as a sculptor of people, and I’ve made my career on both private commissions and public works of sculpture. Representing people is my calling and the subjects are diverse and often compelling, whether historical or current and whether real or symbolic and sometimes, powerfully both.  I involve myself as deeply as I can with each subject. I meet with the subjects or those who knew them well, to try to understand what forces drove them. Where this is not possible,  I learn about their history until I have my own sense of a nucleus of what to convey.  My goal is to help this essence resonate with the viewer’s idea, vision or memory of the subject.  At that point, the sculpture truly has a life of its own, in the viewer’s mind.  A bridge has been formed between the subject and the viewer. My reward is to know I helped to make that bridge.
